Statues of Andhra Pradesh

~Telugu Thalli

"Ma telugu talliki mallepudaṇḍa", is the official song of Andhra Pradesh written by Sankarambadi Sundarachari and song by Tanguturi Suryakumari. She holds the harvest in her left hand portraying that the Telugu land is always filled with greenery  and In the right hand she holds the kalasam which signifies that she brings all good to the people's lives.

Potti Sriramulu whose sat on a 56 days hunger strike for the cause of Separate Andhra Pradesh State and eventually died during the process. His struggle lead to the formation of separate Telugu state.

Travelling through the roads of Andhra one will not miss the sight of the statues along the highways, towns and the villages. These statues are Incredible life like and some larger than life ,vibrant bringing out the character of the person. In smaller villages and towns , these statues stand as guardians at the entrances of the villages/towns /lanes and a place where people standing or sitting , gather around chatting.

India has a long history of spending lots of money on the statues and so are the controversies around them. Sardar Patel's statue of unity was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31st Oct 2018 Amid lots of controversies , which was built at a cost of ₹2,989 crore, the costliest ever built in India.
Mayawati justified before Supreme Court her life size statues built in UttarPradesh saying it as the "Will of the people". Crores of Rupees were spent on Statues of Mayawati, Kanshi Ram and the Elephants which is the party symbol of BSP.
During N.T. Rama Rao’s tenure in 1987-88 statues 33 renowned personalities were installed on Tank Bund Road,Hyderabad. Later during the separate telangana agitation many of these statues belonging to Andhra leaders were vandalised.
N.T.R during his visit to New York saw the statue of liberty and that's how the idea of Buddha statue on the Gibraltar Rock in the middle of Hussain Sagar was inspired. While transferring the huge monolith statue of Buddha , the statue tipped and fell into Hussian Sagar lake killing 10 people.Nearly after 2 years the statue was pulled out of the lake.

Dr.B.R.Ambedkar is definitely the most predominant personality not just in the rural areas but also in the major towns and cities.Standing at the entrances of the villages/towns/lanes ,he guards the people with the Constitution drafted by him and other members. Dr.Ambedkar  had studied the constitutions of about 60 countries and is recognised as the  "Father of the Constitution of India" .
Probably the country's biggest  Ambedkar statue of 125 Foot, estimated to cost over Rs 146 crore will soon be placed in hyderabad,Telangana. The strength and protection for the common man in our country is the constitution which has been drafted by him. Though we are protected by the fundamental rights which are drafted in the constitution, our politicians make ways to violate them.

When you have so many roads not just in India but across the world named after you, then you must be a Mahatma.

Political chaos/unrest are the best times for miscreants to vandalize the statues.During the Pro-Telangana agitation, the mod became violent, vandalised the statues on the Tankbund road and threw some 11 statues of Seemandhra icons into the Hussiansagar lake. There are many instances of violence when the statues are vandalised, broken, painted and at times garlanded with slippers.
